Regional Government updates public road transport fares in Madeira
Through Ordinance no. 128/2026, published in the 4th Supplement of the JORAM on March 23, 2026, the Regional Government of Madeira introduced significant changes to the fare system applicable to regular municipal and intermunicipal road passenger transport routes.
This measure, which enters into force the day after publication, reflects a fare update of 2.28% for the year 2026, in accordance with the guidelines of the Mobility and Transport Authority. The update takes practical effect from April 1, 2026, covering all monthly intermodal tickets valid for that month and subsequent periods.
Main Adjustments
- Clarification of Rules: Procedures regarding the issuance, use, and validation of tickets have been reviewed, as well as the conditions for the allocation of intermodal passes.
- Mandatory Validation: The mandatory validation of all transport tickets (except onboard tickets) has been reinforced, with failure to validate being punished as travel without a valid ticket.
- Transfer Rules: Pre-purchased tickets now allow transfers within defined time limits: 45 minutes for municipal trips (same operator) and 90 minutes for intermunicipal trips (any operator).
- Profile Updates: Rules for social passes have been clarified, including 4_23, student +23 years, retiree, and disability profiles, with the need for annual or quinquennial renewal of supporting documentation.
The new fare table, contained in Annex II of the Ordinance, includes updated values for onboard tickets, monthly passes, and pre-purchased tickets. The diploma expressly revokes Ordinance no. 237/2024 and Ordinance no. 599/2024.
